Ode to Ginger Beer

We have had such great experiences with the different types of ginger beer here:

1.   Bundaberg - my favourite... comes in different flavours as well such as blood orange, peach, guava, sarsaparilla & lemon lime bitters.
2.  the Wednesday farmer's market fresh home made ginger beer - no brand just a stand
3.  Bickford's Ginger Beer concentrate... just add 1 part ginger beer concentrate (or to taste) and 3 parts sparkling water.

I loved ginger ale before...once in a while, there were some restaurants that had good ginger beer. Definitely an unimagined but welcomed surprise as a result of our move to Brisbane.

weekend talk about the weekend

This weekend was the Paniyiri Festival in Brisbane.  Danny and I were quite excited to go to check it out... expecting there to be tons of delicious food, cool little booths and of course its Greek.

After walking 30 minutes to the said location, we were disappointed to find a required $10 entrance fee per person, a whole bunch of kids running around and nothing but 'greek' food stands like gyros, deep fried dough stuff and really loud music that resembles gypsy music.

We decided to ditch the Paniyiri Festival and have our own festival at the Little Greek Taverna in West End.
The taverna, which reminds me of the many taverna's we ate at in Greece had a delicious and authentic Greek menu, complete with simple and delish Greek salad, delish frappes similar to those we ordered beach side in Greece and fall off the bone lamb... sorry but sometimes I am a monster who occasionally eats baby animals.

Afterward we hung out at the Queen's Park... surrounded by some old buildings

Today we hung out around in the Botanical Gardens and spent the afternoon reading, eating pistachios and sparkling water... it was verry nice and relaxing.

Settled

Finally, it is safe to say that as of this week we can be considered settled:

a. we now have a mobile phone
b. we are now connected to the internets
c. we are unpacked, organized, insect bombed, cleaned and decorated
d. we have received our Queensland Driver Licenses, Tax ID #'s & Bank of Queensland debit cards

It took a lot of work but its such a relief to be able to just live without worrying about another lame detail.

Also, Frank Turner ruled the school on Sunday.

some apt pics.

Fraser Island 4 to 6 of May

Danny and I decided to go on an adventure during Labor Day weekend.  We got our hiking and camping gear ready and started our 4 hr drive north to Hervey Bay.  We arrived around 5 am in the morning in order to catch the 8 am ferry to Fraser Island.  Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island, in fact only four-wheel drive vehicles are allowed because the whole island is covered in sand. Also, the island is jungly and full of wild dingoes. There were waves but since it's so close to the Great Barrier Reef, ocean swimming and surfing is restricted in some areas due to sharks, jelly fish or something else that is deadly.  Danny and I got off the ferry with full intentions of hiking... little did we know that the hiking we had mapped out was going to take more than the whole time we would have been on the island... we found that out the hard way.

A nice tour bus driver let us hitch a ride with him to the other side of the island, at this point we were thinking we are making great time! We start our hike from Eurong Beach hoping to make it through the Valley of the Giants (a forest of the tallest trees on the Island) and finally getting on the Great Walk hiking path from the beach to Eli Creek.  After about 30 minutes and only covering less than 1 centimeter on our map we decided to change routes.  We had planned on hiking to Lake Wobby to Lake Mackenzie and then just haning out around Lake Mackenzie, then hike back to the ferry.  We had hiked for 8 hrs straight covering 22 km by the time we had reached Lake Mackenzie.  It was almost night fall when we reached camp.  It was scary because we encountered 0 other hikers on the path we were on.

Finally we made it to Lake Mackenzie, just as it was getting dark...I honestly feared for my life because until we reached the lake there were no other indications that we were going to be safe by nightfall! We decided to set up camp in a fenced in picnic area by the lake, since there were no other campers or hikers around and it was getting really dark and with the free roaming dingoes, we didn't want to risk it.  Finally our tent is up, the full moon is out and all we can hear are the sounds from the jungle around us.  We eat our provisions of beef jerky, tuna and nuts and try to get some rest.  Sometime in the night we hear, more than once, an attempt of some animal trying to get into the fenced in area, we can tell by the sound of the incessant hitting of the metal fence.  Also, there were wierd ass sounds almost like screaming monkeys during the night but there were none on the island so we could only assume it was some weird dingo howl or something. Needless to say, I didn't sleep very well...what with the animal sounds and the hypothermia who could?

The best parts of our adventure:

hiking in peace with no other people around, appreciating the beauty of the whole island.  Hearing the sound of the birds and other creatures while we walked through.

Seeing cool views of the ocean from the look out points, sand dunes and different types of plants, trees and flowers.

we encountered a creepy spider with a beautifully spun web, we also saw an echidna waddling along our path and digging its head deep in the sand when it heard us approach.

seeing the beauty of the deserted lake...no soul in sight.  Only the reflection of the moon on the clear water, the white sand beach and the trees surrounding the lake.

The following day we spent the morning at the lake, just relaxaing and hanging out... we headed back towards the ferry.

insect bombs

the lady who used to live in our apartment is beyond gross...we have experienced more than a handful of little critters in the apartment despite my many attempts of cleaning constantly...unfortunately our rental lease stipulates that any pests or vermin is our problem....thus the insect bombs.

I am now forced to hang out at my fave cafe manned by my favorite asians who luckily play Damien Rice instead of the pop asia radio station...don't get me wrong Danny and I have seen a few music videos on the pop asia tv channel as well as heard a sliver of a melody whilst on our road trip last weekend to Fraser Island...and enjoyed it! Its just I am glad that I dont have to listen to it for two hrs while i use their weefee.

p.s. I am obviously joking abt the implication that all asians listen to pop asia ; )

one week off the grid

I cant believe it's only been one week since we moved out of our apartment hotel to settle in to our very own place...that we actually picked together.  It's been  nuts because I have spent most of my time cleaning, organizing and unpacking.  Ater many trips to Big W and a field trip to Ikea it's starting to finally feel like home. We still don't have internet but hopefully my wee fee mooching off cafes will end soon.

It's officially city living for Danny and I since we have also relinquished our rental car.  On the one hand not worrying about parking and the additional parking tickets we got is nice but the idea of not having the freedom to go on the road to wherever is a little constricting....hopefully with a few paychecks we can get a scooter!

I have been officially declined for two jobs.... I am only sort of bummed because I am still going through the recruitment process for a real estate company...keep your fingers crossed.

the end.

no shoes, no shirts, no service!

Apparently 7-Eleven's here do not care if you do not have shoes, or a shirt... they will still serve you!

weird things:

-a pigeon walking out from behind a pizza place counter
-different flavored Schweppes Agrum...mmmmmhmmm
-I have been on the phone with CapitalOne fro 56 min and 22 seconds because they put a hold on my funds...they said I made too many payments in one week... they wanted to hold the funds to make sure that it was not a mistake... granted they already debited it from my account rendering said funds to be completely unavailable.
-getting bank accounts here is not easy
-our tax rates as foreigners are higher even though we are not able to participate in the universal health care
